Chicago Business: “It’s try, try again for liquor distributor Glazer’s”

Glazer’s, an Addison, Texas-based company, announced yesterday it has partnered with Stoller Wholesale Wines & Spirits Inc. of Franklin Park to create Stoller Wholesale Distributing of Illinois. The new company will be run by the Stoller family but owned by Glazer’s, the country’s fourth-largest wine and spirits distributor.
Terms of the deal, which is expected to close by the end of the year, were not disclosed.
Glazer’s wants to expand its footprint. It’s already distributing in 14 states, and it needs Stoller’s help to expand further.

Stoller distributes Don Sebastiani & Sons wines, Imperial Brands spirits and RumChata.
“The Stollers today run a profitable and successful company, and our intention is to build on that success,” said Louis Zweig, a spokesman for Glazer’s.
A Stoller representative was not available for comment.
“Illinois is a very complex market and requires those investments, which could explain why others have come and gone, including Glazer’s,” Wirtz Corp., owner of distributor Wirtz Beverage Co., said in a statement. “But, anyone who knows our organization knows that whether it is wholesale business, our real estate portfolio or our teams on the ice, we do not shy away from taking on competition in any arena.”
Glazer’s operated in Illinois a decade ago when it joined forces with National Wine & Spirits of Indianapolis in 2003 to oversee Union Beverage Co. in Chicago. Three years later, Glazer’s bought out National Wine & Spirits.
Then Glazer’s sold part of its Union Beverage stake to a division of Wirtz Beverage Group in 2008. Three months later, it offloaded the remainder of Union Beverage to Wirtz and effectively left Illinois. Glazer’s sold Union Beverage’s Chicago headquarters, once a Campbell Soup factory, to Mexican investors for $4.3 million.
Glazer’s then tried to team up with Southern Wine & Spirits of America Inc. of Miami, the nation’s largest wine and spirits distributor, but that deal fell apart a year later.
